Abstract.  Television, a telecommunication medium for the transmission of moving images and sound (cf.wikipedia). It substantiates the “far sight” concept of its mixed Greek-Latin etymology. But this definition may be misleading. Are the current technological solutions allowing us to “see far” as if “being there”? Audiovisual communication systems become an “emotional experience” (the viewer’s experience). The years of an observer passively watching — most likely in a group of friends or family — through an “isolating” glass window are definitely over. Internet technologies have disrupted the TV industry with new content delivery models (broadband vs broadcast) and features (VoDtime shift, and mobile consumption) now expected by consumers. The classical funding schemes (public, advertisement, subscription, pay-per-view) are now being challenged. Content production, telecommunications and consumer electronics industries struggle to stay in business by redefining the interaction of the viewer with the transmitted scene. In the context described, what do we understand by Television and how may its technologies evolve in the near future? What is the role of current research in acquisition, transmission and display for audiovisual content production and communication? This talk will review these concepts and try to provide some insight on the future of Television.
