Szymon Greś

I was a research engineer (Ph.D.) at Inria (French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automatic Control) in Rennes.

Research interests / field of activity

My research concerns subspace identification and fault detection/isolation in application to Operational Modal Analysis and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). In particular I work on:

  • Subspace identification under mixed ambient and periodic excitation
  • Quantification of statistical uncertainty in estimates from subspace methods
  • Data and model driven damage diagnosis: detection, localization and quantification

The application cases I am interested in are offshore structures like wind turbines and bridges. Currently I work on advanced damage localization methods and their real-time demonstration on a structure in Inria’s show room.

Short bio

I’ve received an Engineering degree (equivalent to B.Sc.) in Civil and Structural Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology in Poland in 2013, and M.Sc. in the same domain from Aalborg University at Aalborg, Denmark in 2015. I’ve spent 2015 as researcher in the offshore wind energy sector at Universal Foundation A/S with whom I received an InnovationsFonden grant for a Ph.D. starting in 2016. During my Ph.D. I was part of the SHM group at Aalborg University and I participated in an Innobooster project that conceived research collaboration with Structural Vibration Solutions A/S and the I4S team at Inria in Rennes, where I’ve spent 5 months in an academic research stay. I’ve received the Ph.D. degree in Civil and Structural Engineering from Aalborg University in 2019.
