Erwan David will give a talk on May 13 at 10h30 in room Byron Beige (fifth floor) entitled “Artificial scotomas onscreen and in virtual reality: experiments and applications”
Abstract: Artificial scotomas are simulated visual field losses. They have been used in experimental protocol as early as 1975 (McConkie and Rayner) in reading tasks. They are often implemented to study visual attention in general, and central and peripheral vision interplay in particular. They are also employed to investigate the development of coping mechanisms in the presence of scotomas. We wish to create a gaze-contingent protocol suitable for the study and classification of scotomas. For this purpose, we ran artificial scotoma experiments onscreen and in virtual reality. We discuss our observations, our methodology and the benefits of virtual reality for future experiments.
Bio: Erwan David est doctorant en informatique au laboratoire des sciences du numérique de Nantes. Après un Master recherche en psychologie sociale et cognitive, il s’est dirigé vers un second Master recherche en science cognitive. Erwan étudie aujourd’hui l’attention visuelle. Plus particulièrement, la vision centrale et périphérique chez des sujets sains et chez des patients présentant une perte du champ visuel. Les applications de ses recherches sont en lien avec la compression de contenus visuel pour le stockage et la transmission, mais aussi en lien avec une meilleure compréhension des pertes du champ visuel pour le développement d’outil d’analyses et d’étude.
