Xiao Xiao -- Isogeometric Design and Analysis of Lattice-Skin structures

11 January 2019

The development of additive manufacturing techniques allows novel designs using lattice structures in mechanical parts, lightweight materials, biomaterials and so forth. Lattice-skin structures are a class of structures that couple thin-shells with lattices, which potentially combine the advantages of the thin-shell and the lattice structure. However, in current commercial CAD and finite element analysis packages, it is not trivial to deal with the generation and analysis of lattice-skin structures. A new and systematic scheme that integrates the geometric design and structural analysis of lattice- skin structures will be introduced in the talk.

In the geometry generation of lattice-skin structures, the shape interrogation of subdivision surfaces using a bounding volume tree of k-dops (discrete oriented polytopes) and implicit matrix representations of Bézier surfaces is introduced. The structural analysis of lattice-skin structures is in the isogeometric framework, in which the thin-shell is represented with a subdivision surface and the lattice structure is modelled with pin-jointed truss elements. The lattice-skin coupling is considered with a Lagrange multiplier approach. Some numerical examples will also be presented.
