This French project aims at providing evidences concerning the interest of serious games to design non pharmacological approaches to prevent dementia patients from behavioral disturbances, most particularly for the stimulation of apathy.

Az@GAME is a DGCIS project – Investissements d’Avenir – in the framework of the call: Health and autonomy in the living environment thanks to digital technologies in the programme: Development of the Digital Economy – Innovative Uses, Services and Contents. It is a 3-year project starting on 1 January 2012. The main partners are : Groupe Genious, IDATE, INRIA, CMMR du CHU nice and CobTek team. INRIA received funding of 203,872 euros (193,678).

Az@GAME is an ergonomic, innovative and fun device for Alzheimer’s patients, family and professional caregivers. Az@GAME assesses and promotes the maintenance of autonomy in Alzheimer’s disease and related pathologies. Cognitive, functional and physical trainings allow the patient to maintain a maximum of autonomy but also to provide follow-up information to the caregivers. The signs of the disease appear progressively, the patient’s condition evolves, as does the training needs of the family caregiver. Depending on the results of the patient’s training and the state of his or her knowledge, the caregiver is offered a personalised training programme adapted to his or her needs. In EHPAD, the caregiving teams can follow the state of their patients’ disease evolution thanks to Az@GAME and an interactive training with virtual scenarios that allow self-evaluation training through virtual clinical feedback.
