Jana’s visit in Stellenbosch University

Jana is a second year doctorate student working on routing protocols in wireless ad hoc networks. As part of her thesis she had the opportunity to join the DSP research group within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University in South Africa as a visiting researcher for two months, from mid March to mid May 2023.

During her stay, Jana worked with Dr. Riaan Wolhuter on routing protocols in wireless ad hoc networks. Through several meetings with Dr. Wolhuter they discussed how to leverage the signal strength and Friis equation for forwarding a message.

Besides the discussions with Dr. Wolhuter regarding the routing protocol, Jana had the chance to participate in the weekly meetings with the DSP group in the presence of Prof. Thomas Niesler and Dr. Riaan Wolhuter. It was a rich experience exchanging information with the engineering students (masters, PhDs) and Post-Docs especially in Machine Learning. As she discussed with Christiaan Geldenhuys her machine learning approach to build a classification model for studying human mobility.

As part of her PhD topic, Jana used FiPy microcontrollers to collect data. Thus she had the chance to calculate the power consumption of her experimentation part by using the ‘Power profiler kit II’ to measure the current when scanning through the FiPy device and get the measurements for the analysis.

After her visit, Jana is still working on the idea that she discussed with Dr. Wolhuter to build a new approach for routing protocol and she is still in contact with Dr. Wolhuter to finalize their contribution alongside with Dr. Nathalie Mitton.
