Internship M1: Adding a satellite data visualization module to the urban-sprawl platform

Keywords : Satellite images, urban sprawl, Python, OpenStreetMap

Required Level : BAC + 4

Context

Inria is a computer science and mathematics research institute. The STEEP team has developed the urban-sprawl open-source platform for calculating and analyzing indices linked to urban sprawl. These spatialized indices measure accessibility, dispersion and land-use mix. The data used comes from the OpenStreetMap collaborative open platform.

Objective

The aim of this internship is to define and prototype a new functionality for the platform, in particular the calculation and visualization of data from satellite observations such as vegetation index, soil cover or light pollution.

The project is divided into several stages:

  • state of the art of freely available multi-spectral satellite images (Sentinel, Lansat, . . . ) and definition of possible visualizations
  • familiarization with Python geoprocessing tools (rasterio, geopandas, proj, leaflet)
  • prototyping of the module for displaying satellite image data on the platform)

Skills required

  • Scientific Python
  • Autonomy and initiative, rigor and methodology, organization
