I will report on recent work in our research group on analyzing social media text for author profiling: predicting age, gender, education level, personality, etc. from text messages. The current method of choice for this is some form of supervised machine learning (automatic text categorization), and I will look at some of the methodological challenges involved in this approach. I will also describe some applications of profiling I was involved in, such as the AMiCA project on security for children active in social media, using profiling to detect cyberbullying, internet predators, and suicidal feelings.
