Return to Research Projects

ACTION3DS

ACTION3DS is a collaborative research project funded by the French government as part of its « investissement d’avenir » program.

The IMAGINE team for this project was composed of Remi Ronfard, Laurent Boiron, Inigo Rodriguez, and Christophe Lino.

The contribution of IMAGINE focused on the design and implementation of a novel pre-vizualization toolset dedicated to stereoscopic 3D filming. The tools are targeted to directors, giving them an intuitive control of

  • Previz: Turn a storyboard into a 3D animation sequence running in the Blender Game Engine (BGE)
  • Virtual stereography: control all parameters of a steroscopic 3D rig (camera position and orientation, focal length, focus distance, aperture, interocular distance, convergence distance) in real time using a gamepad controler
  • Mise-en scène:  watch a simulation of the perceived 3D scene in a “virtual projection room” showing alerts of depth violations, and effects of depth deformations
  • Storyboarding: Print the previz iamges, stereoscopic 3D rig parameters and projection room simulations into an augmented “stereoscopic storyboard” for use during filming

More information can be obtained from our IC3D 2014 and Blender Conference 2014 papers; and in Sergi Pujades’ PhD thesis. For availability of the Dynamic Stereoscopic Previz toolset, please contact us.
