Intracortical neural recording is an enabling technique both in fundamental research and clinical applications, but neural recording viability is currently limited primarily by the brain’s adverse response to the penetrating electrodes. My work seeks to address this challenge, while maintaining high channel counts and high spatial density of the individual recording electrodes. This talk will show the design, fabrication, and assembly of carbon fiber-based microwire neural recording arrays with thirty-six 7um electrodes arrayed at a pitch of 38um. Furthermore, I will introduce the upcoming plans for in-vivo testing, as well as discuss the vision and challenges for electronics integration and data transmission.
