Category: General Riccardo DiDio - Depth cameras to assess respiratory patterns

24 November 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic in the early 2020s has raised the level of awareness about the contagiousness of some viruses and how much is important to prevent the spread of the virus. This is of particular importance in hospital settings where the same medical device is often used for multiple patients. For this reason, it is important to disinfect the device between uses and often change removable parts such as filters. In the field of respiratory medicine, the gold standard for performing vital tests is the spirometry. This technique requires the patient to breathe through the mouth on a machine that is able to understand the volume and velocity of the breathed flow. However, this is often a troublesome operation for some patients who have undergone chest surgery. In this presentation we will see how to use depth cameras to replace spirometry, advantages and disadvantages of this technique will be discussed.
